Women’s transfer fee record broken for third time this summer as Geyoro joins London City Lionesses

September 5 – London City Lionesses have secured the world-record signing of France and PSG’s Grace Geyoro, who will join the newly-promoted side for a world transfer record £1.4 million.

This will mark the third time in two months that the women’s transfer record has been broken, following Olivia Smith’s £1 million switch from Liverpool to Arsenal in July and Lizbeth Ovalle’s £1.1million move to Orlando Pride from Tigres a month later.

The transfer is a bold statement from a club which spent last season in the second tier. Founded in 2019 after splitting from Millwall Lionesses, London City Lionesses are one of the only independent franchises in elite English women’s football.

The signing of Geyoro, 28, represents the club’s 16th permanent arrival in a whirlwind summer backed by American businesswoman owner Michele Kang.

In addition to London City, she owns Washington Spirit in the NWSL and last year consolidated a majority stake in super club Olympique Lyonnais Féminin.

With 103 caps and 22 goals for France, Geyoro brings proven experience at the top level, having played at two World Cups, two European Championships and the 2024 Olympics. Her arrival signals London City’s determination not only to survive in the WSL but to challenge the league’s established giants.

For a club that only lifted the Championship trophy last season, the combination of Kang’s global ambition and Geyoro’s pedigree marks a transformative moment for the club as it looks to leave a mark on its return to the WSL. They will host European champions Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, though Geyoro is expected to make her debut on Sunday September 14 at home to Manchester United.

The women’s transfer record has more than quintupled in the space of five years.

Growth of women’s record transfer fees:
1 September 2020: Pernille Harder – Wolfsburg to Chelsea – £250,000
7 September 2022: Keira Walsh – Manchester City to Barcelona – £400,000
13 February 2024: Racheal Kundananji – Madrid CFF to Bay FC -£685,000
22 January 2025: Naomi Girma – San Diego Wave to Chelsea – £900,000
17 July 2025: Olivia Smith – Liverpool to Arsenal – £1m
21 August 2025: Lizbeth Ovalle – Tigres UANL to Orlando Pride – £1.1m
5 September 2025: Grace Geyoro – Paris St-Germain to London City – £1.4m
