MLS changes calendar to align with Europe’s big leagues

November 14 – After two years of debate Major League Soccer (MLS) is changing its season dates to align with Europe’s big leagues, dropping its calendar year season in favour of a summer-to-spring schedule starting in 2027.

Before they make the switch – which the MLS says is “one of the most significant developments in the league’s history” – they will play a shortened transition season in 2027 from February to May, with a 14-game regular season, playoffs, and MLS Cup.

The 2027-28 season will begin in mid-to-late July 2027 and conclude with the MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup in May 2028.

The new format will align the MLS tighter with the opportunities within the global transfer market both for the buying of big name talent into the league and maximising the sales of players to non-US clubs.

In particular it will allow clubs to enter into the transfer market and integrated players without the mid-season disruption to club rosters either in the US or Europe.

It also allows MLS clubs and their owners to participate more meaningfully in financial terms in the value chain of their player development processes.

“The calendar shift is one of the most important decisions in our history,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

“Aligning our schedule with the world’s top leagues will strengthen our clubs’ global competitiveness, create better opportunities in the transfer market, and ensure our Audi MLS Cup Playoffs take center stage without interruption. It marks the start of a new era for our league and for soccer in North America.”

The MLS said that aligning with the international match windows will also reduce conflicts between MLS league matches and national team call-ups, particularly during summer tournaments. The Gold Cup, for example, Concacaf’s blue riband men’s national team tournament has always been played with a backdrop of MLS games, often on the same match days.

The league said that with the MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup now playing in May, they have a better slot for weather and can complete play without the interruption of an international match window.

“This change would also provide premier placement on the sports calendar, ensuring maximum attention and visibility for the league’s most important matches,” said the MLS.

The MLS said that research shows 92% of league soccer viewers are in support of the calendar change with fans believing benefits will include improved player performance, better alignment with international competitions, and a May postseason.
